Wiki: This celebration dates back to the mid-seventeenth century during the Heian period and was based on the belief that the dolls had the power to contain evil spirits and diseases corporal. It has its roots in the ancient ritual of 'hina-nagashi (雛 流し), during which some straw dolls were laid on the course of a river to carry away the evil spirits and bad luck.
